About Great Place To Work®

As the global authority on workplace culture, Great Place To Work brings 30 years of groundbreaking research and data to help every place become a great place to work for all. Its proprietary platform and For All™ Model help companies evaluate the experience of every employee, with exemplary workplaces becoming Great Place To Work Certified™ or receiving recognition on a coveted Best Workplaces List.

A graph showing how companies on the 100 Best Companies to Work For List beat the Russell 1000 by a factor of nearly 4x.

Companies made the list based on responses from nearly 630,000 employees.

April 4, 2024, Oakland, Calif. — When employees experience a high level of trust in the workplace, the whole business benefits.

Great Place To Work® has been producing the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For® List since 1998. When FTSE Russell analyzed the historic returns of companies that made the list, it found the stock performance beat the market average by a factor of 3.68, or 1,896 percentage points.

“What this analysis shows is that looking at different criteria on evaluating companies like the 100 Best — based on employee experience and culture — can make a difference in stock performance,” says Ryan Giannotto, manager of equity index research at the London Stock Exchange Group, which produces the Russell 1000, an index of the biggest U.S. stocks.

The 2024 100 Best achieved total returns of 41.6%, outperforming the Russell 1000 by a 15.6% margin.

“Generally, if you can beat your benchmark target by several points, that’s considered very impressive, but this is staggering,” Giannotto says.

Even more remarkable is that each company gets the same amount of representation in the portfolio.

“A lot of the stock market action over the past year has been dominated by a group of very large tech companies we call the Magnificent Seven,” he says. “What’s fascinating is the 100 Best achieved better — not just equal — but better results than the market without drawing from this pool of ultra performers. Without these stocks, it would be impressive, but to actually beat it to quite a transcendent level, that is striking.”

AI ready

Building trust over the years has positioned 100 Best companies to have a competitive edge in a new age of innovation.

At the 100 Best:

  • 86% of employees say people give extra effort on the job
  • 83% of employees say people adapt quickly to change
  • 84% of employees say they can participate in innovation opportunities

This ensures these companies will be best prepared for the many groundbreaking changes disrupting the business environment in the years ahead — in particular, navigating the future of artificial intelligence at work.

AI will enable a new era of equity and inclusion for companies that have built a high-trust culture.

“Great companies will understand how to optimize their talent in a more equitable way than anything we’ve seen before,” says Michael C. Bush, CEO at Great Place To Work. “This is good news for leaders committed to culture work. It will help us create a great place to work for all, abundance for all, and opportunities for all — and you need all to succeed.”

Here are the top 10 on this year’s list:

  1. Hilton

Dec. 1, 2023 (Oakland, Calif.) – Employers can fixate on benefits like paid leave when trying to evaluate efforts to support working parents.

When Great place To Work® surveyed more than 612,000 employees with parenting duties about their experience in the workplace, benefits like paid leave were only one piece of the puzzle. To make the Best Workplaces for Parents™ List in 2023, employers had to match generous benefits with another key ingredient: compassionate and helpful management.

For companies on the list, 87% of working parents said management delivers on its promises, compared to just 56% of parents at a typical U.S. workplace.

Here are the top five companies in the large category (1,000+ employees) on this year’s list:

  1. Cisco
  2. Bain & Company
  3. Deloitte
  4. NVIDIA
  5. Marriott International

Here are the top five companies in the small and medium-sized category (10-999 employees):

  1. WestPac Wealth Partners
  2. Mercury
  3. NerdWallet
  4. dbt Labs
  5. Paramount Software Solutions

At winning companies, extra support for employees was rewarded with elevated care for the customer.

“It’s hard to give your all for a company when you struggle to care for your family,” says Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place To Work. “These companies know that caring for the needs of workers leads to increased productivity, performance, and innovation velocity — must-haves for businesses today.”

What benefits help employers stand out for working parents?

To understand how great workplaces compete, Great Place To Work identified the top 100 companies and the bottom 100 companies from the organizations eligible for this year’s list, ranked according to how many days of paid leave was offered to new parents.

For the top 100, companies average 78 paid days of maternity leave and 60 paid days of paternity leave. At the bottom 100 companies, employers offered half that average: 40 days paid for moms and 30 days paid for dads.

Other competitive benefits include childcare subsidies (49% of top 100 vs. 23% at bottom 100) and flextime (90% at top 100 vs. 69% at bottom 100).

However, companies were more likely to make the 2023 list when best-in-class benefits were matched with high levels of trust in management.

List winners offer lessons in how to support managers to ensure every employee with parenting duties has a caring and engaged people leader:

  1. Don’t ignore the importance of weekly one-on-one meetings.
  2. Extend support to the whole family unit.
  3. Hold managers accountable for how they support parents.

Here’s what it looks like in practice: At Best Workplaces for Parents, Support From Managers Unlocks Generous Benefits

Nov. 16, 2023 (Oakland, Calif.) – All around the world, employees need the same things from their workplace in order to thrive: trust in leaders, pride in their work, and connection to co-workers.

For the Fortune World’s Best Workplaces™ List, Great Place To Work® identified the 25 companies that, according to their employees, offer the best experience for workers of all backgrounds, job types, and geographic locations. More than 6.2 million survey responses were analyzed, representing the experiences of 18 million workers around the world.

At winning companies, 90% of employees reported having a great workplace, compared to a little more than half of employees at typical workplaces, according to a global market survey from Great Place To Work.

“It doesn’t matter what country or continent you call home,” says Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place To Work. “What matters is the trust companies build with their employees. High-trust workplaces listen to all their people, innovate, adapt, measure, and repeat.”

“This global list followed a rigorous process, one that assures that employees have spoken about what they think are exceptional workplaces where they feel trusted, empowered, and energized to do their best work," says Alyson Shontel, editor-in-chief of Fortune

To be eligible, companies have to be listed on at least five our Best Workplaces™ country lists around the world, employ at least 5,000 workers globally, with 40% or 5,000 of employees outside their headquarters country.

This year’s list was more competitive than ever, with a 28% increase in companies participating in the global survey from 2022, and a 40% increase in the number of employee surveys received.

Here are the top 5 companies:

  1. Hilton
  2. DHL Express
  3. Cisco
  4. AbbVie
  5. Teleperformance

The 25 winning companies had a larger percentage of workers reporting fair pay (75%), healthy work-life balance support (84%), and a voice in decisions that affected their lives (81%), compared to a typical global workplace.

At winning companies, 88% of employees would recommend their employer to friends and family — 34 percentage points higher than the global average of 54%.

Great Place To Work identified four ways the top companies build a better workplace:

  1. Involve employees in decisions that affect them
  2. Ensure every employee has a fair, engaged manager
  3. Encourage every employee to find a healthy work-life balance
  4. Connect every employee to meaningful work
